The Question Every Client Asks
"Should we use WordPress or build something custom?" After delivering 100+ web projects, here's my honest framework for answering this question.
Choose WordPress When...
You need a content-heavy website
Blogs, news sites, company websites with frequent content updates. WordPress's editor is unbeatable for non-technical users.
Budget is tight
A WordPress site can be up and running for a fraction of the cost. Themes, plugins, and the ecosystem save weeks of development time.
You need it fast
Need a professional website in 2 weeks? WordPress can deliver. Custom development? That's 2 months minimum.
SEO matters from day one
WordPress with Yoast or RankMath gives you enterprise-level SEO tools out of the box.
Choose Custom Development When...
You need specific business logic
CRM systems, booking platforms, complex dashboards - WordPress wasn't built for these.
Performance is critical
A custom React or Next.js app will always be faster than WordPress loaded with 30 plugins.
You need scalability
If you're expecting millions of users, custom architecture gives you full control over scaling.
Security is paramount
WordPress is the #1 target for hackers because it's so popular. Custom code means a smaller attack surface.
The Hybrid Approach
Sometimes the best answer is both:
- WordPress for the marketing site and blog
- Custom application for the product/dashboard
- Headless WordPress: Use WordPress as a CMS with a custom frontend
Cost Comparison
| Factor | WordPress | Custom |
| Initial cost | $2K-10K | $10K-50K+ |
| Monthly maintenance | $50-200 | $200-1000 |
| Time to launch | 2-4 weeks | 2-6 months |
| Customization | Limited by plugins | Unlimited |
| Long-term scalability | Moderate | High |
My advice? Start with WordPress unless you have a specific reason not to. You can always migrate later.
