Most E-Commerce Sites Are Built Wrong
I've built over 30 e-commerce websites. And here's what I've learned: the fanciest design means nothing if your checkout process is confusing, your pages are slow, or your search doesn't work.
Speed Is Everything
The Hard Numbers:
- A 1-second delay in page load = 7% drop in conversions
- 53% of mobile users leave if a page takes over 3 seconds
- Amazon found that every 100ms of latency cost them 1% in sales
How to Get Fast:
- Optimize images (WebP, lazy loading, proper sizing)
- Use a CDN for static assets
- Implement server-side rendering or static generation
- Minimize JavaScript bundles
The Checkout Flow That Converts
Rule #1: Fewer steps = more sales
The best checkout I ever built had 3 steps:
1. Cart review
2. Shipping + Payment (same page)
3. Confirmation
Rule #2: Guest checkout is non-negotiable
28% of shoppers abandon carts because they're forced to create an account. Always offer guest checkout.
Rule #3: Show total cost early
Hidden shipping costs are the #1 reason for cart abandonment. Show the total as early as possible.
Search That Actually Works
A good search bar can increase conversions by 50%. Here's what matters:
- Autocomplete suggestions as users type
- Typo tolerance - "iphoen" should still find "iPhone"
- Filters that work - price range, category, brand, ratings
- Relevant results - not just keyword matching
Mobile-First Is Not Optional
70% of e-commerce traffic comes from mobile devices. Yet most sites are still designed desktop-first. Your mobile experience should be:
- Thumb-friendly navigation
- Large, tappable buttons
- Swipeable product galleries
- Easy-to-fill forms with proper input types
